The NOLA Artist Incubator has been selected to receive a 2022 Keep Louisiana Beautiful Beautification Grant to support our Galvez Garden Native Plant Initiative!

The purpose of the Galvez Garden Native Plant Initiative is to improve upon our beautiful, well- maintained public garden to be a source of community pride and add a green space to the vibrant neighborhood of St. Roch. Benefits include providing a welcoming, safe, and inviting place for children and the elderly to gather and enjoy the garden.

By adding more native plants we will directly be helping the environment, preventing water run-off, and improving air quality. Native plants have the ability to pull and store excess carbon and are a delight when used intentionally in landscaping. In addition to adding beauty -including many other benefits- they’ll provide less long term maintenance, which is invaluable as we look towards the future in intentionally stewarding the public green space.

We believe that people are less likely to litter in areas that are well maintained and beautiful, so by improving our existing public pocket park in a highly visible area, we will reduce litter in our community.

Our project aims to add: more native plants, (specifically Louisiana Super Plants); a bamboo privacy wall and hardscaping to serve as perennial security screens and windbreak; and, a “Welcome to St. Roch” sign. Finally, a trash can to deter litter has been included in our plans to encourage our visitors to Keep Louisiana Beautiful.

We are very thankful that due to receiving this grant from KLB, our project will now be able to move forward in a timely manner to assist our work in creating sustainable green spaces to improve our city. We look forward to using this grant to aid us in our continued efforts to improve the community. Stay tuned!
