Happy New Year! we are pleased to announce we have the new greenhouse up, just in time to start planting for the spring. We are looking forward to offering expanded programming as a result of the new infrastructure at Galvez Garden. Introducing a new weekly volunteer day, Gatherings at Galvez Garden will be offered every Friday this month from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the Garden.

Gathering at Galvez Garden

People interested in learning more about our garden, growing plants from seed, sustainable urban agriculture, or just enjoying the butterflies are welcome to visit our Gatherings at Galvez Garden on Fridays. Wear close toed shoes and have protection from the sun. No experience required.

Additionally we are pleased to be offering our third workshop in a series of four by artist-in-resident, Lilith Dorsey, M.A. on January 18th at 10:00 am.

Journaling in Handmade Journals

Join us as Lilith guides participants on a journaling journey at Galvez Garden. This class allows participants to unlock their creativity in every way. We will begin by gathering natural materials to create the front and back covers of our handmade journals. While this is happening we will talk about the traditional plants used by both indigenous and enslaved people on this land. After crafting our covers we will hand stitch our journals together. Then we will take some time to explore the garden pondering some of the ecological challenges we face currently or those that our ancestors faced here in New Orleans and create a piece based on that in our journal. This could be a drawing of a native plant or pollinator, it could be a sketch for a possible butterfly garden, it could be a poem about your ancestor’s garden. The possibilities are endless, and at the end we will regroup and share what we have created. Please bring your favorite drawing or writing materials, all other items will be provided.
