On Sunday participants in our workshop created beautiful scarves, bags, and satchels using natural dye and block printing. Led by current Artist-in-Resident, Lilith Dorsey hosted an unforgettable workshop in which guests of the workshop created unique fabric art at Galvez Garden. Known for their passion for art and writing that connects deeply with nature, Lilith hosted an engaging workshop that allowed participants to explore the vibrant world of natural indigo dyeing and block printing.

Attendees gathered, eager to dive into the artistic process at Galvez Garden. Lilith began by introducing the fascinating history and techniques of natural indigo dyeing, explaining how this ancient practice has been used across cultures for centuries, and its specific relationship with Louisiana and our relationship with France. Participants learned about the indigo plant, its significance, and the process of creating dye from its leaves. The air was filled with optimism as everyone prepared to bring their own fabric to life with rich, blue hues.

Next came the block printing session, where creativity truly flourished. Participants were given pre-designed blocks featuring patterns and imagery, alongside the unique opportunity to carve their own designs from potatoes.

This playful approach added a personal touch to the workshop, allowing each artist to express their individuality. Laughter, camaraderie, and free conversation filled the garden as participants shared tips, techniques, inspiration, and spoke about the developments at the garden, creating a sense of community that is so integral to the spirit of New Orleans.

The workshop was not just about learning new skills; it was about connecting with nature and each other. As participants dipped their fabrics into the indigo dye, the process became a meditative experience, grounding them in the moment while encouraging creativity to flow freely.

Everyone left with beautiful, hand-dyed fabrics and a sense of accomplishment, but more importantly, they left with lasting memories of a day spent in the company of fellow art and urban garden enthusiasts. Lilith’s workshop at Galvez Garden was a celebration of creativity, community, and the joy of making art together.

Workshops like this serve a reminder of the beauty that comes from collaboration and the joy of expressing oneself through art. With Lilith Dorsey at the helm, the day was a resounding success, and the spirit of creativity continues to thrive in the heart of New Orleans.
