A New Green Oasis Blossoms in St. Roch

St. Roch Avenue and North Johnson Street have recently undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the collaborative efforts of a local artist, the City of New Orleans, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Engagement, and the NOLA Artist Incubator. The once unremarkable neutral ground is now a vibrant green space, welcoming residents and visitors alike to enjoy its beauty and tranquility.

At the heart of this rejuvenation is a striking “Welcome to St. Roch” sign, fabricated and installed to greet passersby. This inviting marker sets the tone for the neighborhood’s renewed spirit and pride.

Adding to the charm, the NOLA Artist Incubator commissioned local folk artist Sarah Ambrose to create hand-painted panels for a custom bench. Positioned to take advantage of the shade, this bench has quickly become a favorite spot for community members seeking a moment of respite. Ambrose’s intricate and colorful designs have drawn widespread admiration, and her work has been pivotal in redefining the aesthetic of the area.

Inspired by the bench’s success, the organization decided to expand their vision for the site. Additional landscaping was implemented, further enhancing the green space’s appeal. Flowering native plants, beneficial herbs, and thoughtfully arranged plants for pollinators now frame the bench, creating a lush and welcoming environment.

The transformation of this neutral ground into a sustainable native plant garden is a testament to the power of art and collaboration. It serves as a symbol of St. Roch’s ongoing revitalization, offering a beautiful, functional space for all to enjoy.

This project is made with support from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Engagement and through the New Orleans Culture and Recreation Fund.
