Today, the library hosted a delightful workshop as part of the NOLA Artist Incubator’s Budding Artists program, inviting 2-5-year-olds and their caregivers to paint pots and plant seeds. This innovative program not only nurtures a love for the arts but also promotes early literacy skills in young children.

After the opening song and story time the program went on with a burst of creativity as children enthusiastically painted their pots with vibrant colors and imaginative designs. Caregivers joined in, fostering a sense of togetherness and bonding with their little ones. This hands-on activity not only encouraged artistic expression but also helped develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in the young participants. Studies have shown that engaging in art activities at a young age enhances cognitive abilities, including language and literacy skills.

After the pots were decorated, the children carefully planted seeds with the guidance of the workshop facilitators. This activity not only taught them about plant life and growth but also instilled a sense of responsibility and care for living things. As they watered their newly planted seeds, the children learned valuable lessons about nurturing and patience.

Sustainable practices in play include several thoughtful approaches. Firstly, the tables are protected by washable and reusable canvas instead of disposable plastic. The cups are upcycled from the St. Patty’s Day parade. Even the seeds used for this project are sustainable as they have been collected from seed saving and seed sharing practices. This week’s take home project included a call to action to caregivers, challenging them to find and collect objects that could be reused as planters to expand their container garden with their little ones.

Beyond the artistic and botanical aspects, the Budding Artists program also focuses on enhancing early literacy skills. Through storytelling sessions and interactive games related to the theme of the workshop, children were exposed to new words, concepts, and storytelling techniques. These activities stimulate language development and lay a strong foundation for future reading and writing skills.

The Budding Artists program at the library is a wonderful initiative that combines art, nature, and literacy in a fun and engaging way. By providing young children with opportunities to explore their creativity, develop important skills, and bond with their caregivers, this program sets a solid foundation for their future learning and growth.

As the painted pots find their place in windowsills and the planted seeds begin to sprout, today’s workshop serves as a reminder of the power of creativity and connection in shaping the future of our community.
